Chile is a signatory to several multilateral environmental agreements, including:
- The Vienna Convention;
- The Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer (1990);
- The Basel Convention for the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal (1992);
- The Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (2001);
- The Kyoto Protocol on Greenhouse Gas Emission Reductions (2002);
- The Rotterdam Convention on the Prior Informed Consent Procedure for Certain Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides in International Trade (2005).
As an open economy, Chile has signed a range of international trade agreements. Some incorporate environmental issues, including:
- Free Trade Agreement with the U.S.
- Partnership Agreement with the European Union
- Free Trade Agreement with Canada
- These experiences have helped enhance standing agreements with New Zealand, Singapore, and Brunei Darussalam.
Chile has also signed Bilateral Environmental Agreements with Brazil, Argentina, and the Mercosur trade bloc.
