Climate Change
  • Chile ratified the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in 1994 and established a National Climate Change Advisory Committee in 1996. The initial National Communication and Emissions Inventory was submitted in 2000. The Communication reviewed the energy and related sectors, disaggregated by region.
  • In 2001, a year after Chilean ratification of the Kyoto Protocol, the National Commission on the Environment was appointed as Designated National Authority.
  • In January 2006 the CONAMA Governing Board approved a National Climate Change Strategy with a primary focus on mitigation.

  • Initial National Communication on Climate Change submitted; second National Communication in progress.

Adapt to Climate Change Impact

  • Determine climate change impact in and adaptation measures for water resources, biodiversity, and the forestry, livestock, agriculture, energy, fisheries and health sectors.
  • Formulate a National Program and Sector-Specific Plans for adaptation to climate change.

Mitigate GHG Emissions

  • Update emissions inventory.
  • Evaluate country potential for GHG mitigation.
  • Generate domestic mitigation scenarios.
  • Formulate a National Program and Sector-Specific Plans for GHG emission mitigation.

Create and Build National Climate Change Capacities

  • Formulate a National Climate Change Education and Awareness Program.
  • Create a National Biodiversity and Climate Change Research Fund.
  • Strengthen the domestic climate change institutional framework.
